.... ever been? It's pretty cool - an island in the middle of DC named after our 26th President as a memorial to his dedication to conservation. The Island has a giant statue of Roosevelt in the center and short trails with family-friendly paths and names like the "Woods Trail" and the "Uplands Trail." My friend Kit and I thought it would be "great" to take our 3 year old boys and two young infants on.....
"The Swamp Trail" - the longest and most rustic trail on the island, and oh by the way, we met at 7:30am. Kit brought the doughnuts. I brought the bug spray.
The Island is only accessible by a long footbridge over the Potomac. Once you are on the Island, there is exactly ONE trail map at the base of the footbridge and then a confusing series of numbered paths with no names. We were kind of out there on our own, at 7:30am... two women, four kids and a bag of doughnuts.
Here are the boys before the hike:
The footbridge:
Some of the highlights of our hike include:
1. standing about 10 feet from a huge deer
2. the big brown toad I found in the mud
3. actually finding our way off the Island
Some of the lowlights include:
1. letting the boys play on a giant termite mound....
2. the various holes in the border fencing
3. the scenic view from under the bridge.
Dirty water on the right....
... and this on the left.
Kit brought James a doughnut with frosting and sprinkles so he pretty much thought the hike was the best thing ever.
