Uncle Kevin - the best!

Just have to post a shout out (that's a wide-distribution compliment Grandma) to Uncle Kevin who came over for dinner last night, spent the night and then....GOT UP WITH JAMES THIS MORNING AT 6am. What a treat to sleep in! When we finally rolled out of bed at the late late hour of 8:30am, they were playing and watching videos and having fun uncle/nephew time. I think Kevin lasted about 10 minutes before he handed the duty back over to us and went back to bed. Ha!
Here is an unrelated photo of Uncle Kevin with a very apprehensive James, Dora the Explorer and Diego. The kid just does not like large characters in costume.

Helping (?) Around The House

Just a day in the life of James and mommy...

I don't know what James plans on moving into this house, but this is him "tape measuring" our living room until he is distracted by cartoons...

Helping me make dinner...

He actually is quite helpful in the garden. He is VERY good at watering the plants and his pants.

Endless Train Cake

We are STILL making our way through that yummy train cake from James' birthday. Here's how much he likes it...

Sleep is Sleep

James moved to a toddler bed in April and even though it is the same mattress he has been sleeping on for two years in the same bed frame we have been using for two years, he prefers to sleep on the floor. Here he is with the death grip on a fire truck in his left hand, using his lamb for a pillow.

Here, it appears that he was THINKING about sleeping in his bed, but didn't quite make it.

But usually he makes a little nest of stuffed animals.

And just in case there's any question.... In the mornings, I say something like, "good morning buddy! Did you sleep in your bed last night?" His response EVERY SINGLE TIME: "No, I did not!"
OK!

Welcome to DC!

This is from one of our last nights in Florida. A perfect night by the water having dinner and drinks with our good friends the Bridges (reference every great video ever taken of James)...

and here we are in Alexandria! Please note our affinity for water and my deep personal affection for this one particular pink shirt. This waterfront is about 4 blocks from our house and James LOVES to feed the ducks, geese, assorted birds and the occasional catfish. Also on the waterfront is a cool artist co-op called the Torpedo Factory (used to be one). They have two stories of artists working in their studios and selling their work, so I definitely feel like I am back in my element.

Festivus for the Rest of Us

LOVING this town! Yesterday was a festival on the waterfront put on by the Red Cross. Art, food, rides, live music and fireworks. We went in the morning and after downing a 1/2 gallon cranberry lemonade (for $3 - so cheap!!) we made our way to the rides. James immediately went into his usual ride mode. He acts like he hates it and then asks to go "again again again" after every ride. We had to pry his hands off of the train...

and the slide...

and the other train...

Unfortunately, James is not much of a talker (insert my patented sarcastic tone here) and is usually very unclear about what he wants. I think this is something about a slide....

What can it be?!

Happy 2nd Birthday to James! He continues to amaze and surprise us. I suggested sitting down to watch a video and eat an orange the other day and he said, "perfect!"

Really?

Anyway - on to the festivities!

We had a great little homespun birthday party in our backyard complete with James' special guest - Uncle Kevin. Pizza, presents, a train cake.... perfect!

Thanks to all of you who remembered James on his special day. The gifts were all so great and generous. Every time we gave him a new one, he started ripping the paper and saying, "what can it be?!"

New play table from mom & dad....

Remote control tractor from the Bruces...

drum from Uncle Kevin....

These little trucks from Aunt Cathy are an absolute favorite. He "needed" them at all times - even when he was eating his pizza.

New puzzles from Nanet...

Almost every morning, Monday through Friday, James and I have this conversation...

James: where's daddy?

Me: at work

James: No, I want to go to work!

Me: Where do you work?

James: At the job site? (This, he always answers as a question)

Now, thanks to Oma & Opa (Brian's parents), he can! Here's his new Eddie & the Boulder Worksite...

The train cake and James' ridiculous parents...

The inhaling of the train cake...

happy birthday big guy.
